And the ballot is cast

I just cast my ballot. I won’t say for whom, but it will say I voted against the bail reform question for open space and for the two Middlesex County questions — non-binding — calling for arts and women’s health funding.

I’m generally critical of the notion that voting is our only democratic responsibility, but it is incredibly important. The way our money is spent (not just how much, even though conservatives want to paint that as the only question, but on what), how our land and resources are used, and how are democracy functions all depend on who we elect AND on whether we force ourselves into the conversation the rest of the year.

So, if you haven’t cast a ballot, do so. And then get out there and hold accountable those we elect by showing up at meetings, calling their offices, protesting, writing — whatever it takes.

  1. I cast my votes for the various candidates and issues. I went back and forth on the bail question. At first I decided to vote no, then I read more about it and decided to vote yes but with some reservations. I guess the fact that the ACLU was for the reform tipped me towards a yes vote. On the national level, it looks like a huge chunk of Americans are determined to turn America into a fascist plutocratic oligarchy. The far right wing fascist, Kasich, was reelected in Ohio. Mitch McConnell won again and it looks like he will be in charge of the senate. A big win for the libertarian billionaires. Government will be even more crippled than it already is. The crazy party that denies climate change, the party that wants to destroy Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and even the pro corporate Obamacare, will have even more power to obstruct. There is too much money in our corrupted political system and both parties are beholden to the big money donors who want lower taxes on the rich, the destruction of the social safety net and the elimination of labor unions. Change will only come when enough Americans realize what is actually going on but unfortunately too many Americans identify themselves as conservative or right wing and fall for all the GOP/right wing garbage. It's the What's-the-matter-with-Kansas syndrome: people voting against their own best interests. I wish we had a true progressive party, a true workers' party; the Democrats have sold out, they have moved to the right though not as radically as the GOP which has moved far, far radical right wing nutty.

  2. Jaysus lord G_d, the heavens are weeping. Dear Shiva, Scott Walker, John Kasich and Rick Scott were reelected!!!!!!!!! There is no hope, Americans are too stupid, too right wing, too fascistic to even have the dimmest awareness how horrible these monsters are. I want to vomit.
