An epidemic of hypocrisy

Gov. Mark Sanford joins U.S. Sen. John Ensign in the deep waters of hypocrisy, admitting today that he, too, has been having an affair. None of this would matter to me were it not for them both proclaiming themselves to be “family values” conservatives.

Sanford was considered a major player for the Republican nomination for president for 2012 (part of the absurd Washington parlor game that tried to line up candidates before the incumbent has even had time to unpack his socks) and Ensign allegedly was considering his own run. I’m assuming, at this point, that the likelihood of either seeking the White House is pretty slim, though admitting an affair didn’t hurt Bill Clinton. The Democrats, however, have not hammered their opponents with family values — that has been the GOP’s bag and is likely to be a weight around both of their necks, sinking their chances.

So who’s left? Newt Gingrich? Fred Thompson? Rush Limbaugh? Sarah Palin? Yeah, right. Tim Pawlenty appears the go-to guy at the moment, but then it’s way too early to speculate.

  1. Shocking, shocking, hypocrisy from the family values crowd, from the defense of marriage crowd who are so against gay marriage.Sanford and the other GOP hypocrites lambasted Bill Clinton for his affair, they impeached Clinton and were calling for his head. Gingrich, Bob Barr and Bob Livingston (now a lobbyist) were tsk tsking Clinton for his immorality while they were doing the same sleazy thing. Many of these phoney baloney family values Gopers with bogus religiosity thrown in for good measure are quick to criticize others for their moral lapses until they get caught. Spitzer had to resign, shouldn't Sanford resign, too?GOPers like to pretend that they are more moral, more religious, more patriotic than Democrats but it is obviously just garbage.

  2. Another in a long line of GOP HYPOCRITTERSFrom The Huffington Post:As a Member of Congress, Mark Sanford voted repeatedly against abortion rights; against gay marriage, civil unions, and gay adoptions; and for posting the Ten Commandments. As Governor, he continued those positions.Sanford is against gay marriage and defines marriage as one man and one woman. As a member of the House of Representatives during the heyday of the Clinton-Lewinsky affair, he was often a harsh critic of the president for his marital misconduct. This is \”very damaging stuff,\” Sanford declared at one point, when details of Clinton's conduct became known. \”I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign)… I come from the business side,\” he said. \”If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone.\”Mark Sanford:\”The issue of lying is probably the biggest harm, if you will, to the system of Democratic government, representative government, because it undermines trust,\” he told CNN. \”And if you undermine trust in our system, you undermine everything.\”

  3. As a little L libertarian, I am 100% confident that ALL politicians — of either supposed party (there's really NO difference between the two) — are lying sacks of \”barbara streisand\”. The type of individual, who goes into politics in the first place, is exactly who we should NOT trust to be in a position of power. Maybe we can pick our politicians are random and make them wear jail house garb, keep them in jail, and only let them loose at \”reelection\” time?

  4. HOW COULD A BIG GOVERNMENT REPUBLICAN ESPOUSE A LIBERTARIAN PLATFORM? Just because you say it, doesn't make it so. A libertarian guv wouldn't be taxing for social programs or supporting wars overseas. Libertarian? Don't make me laff!
