A cartoon is worth a thousand words

Rob Tornoe’s cartoon today on Politicker.com fairly sums up the contradictions inherent in Obama’s election and the endorsement of same-sex marriage bans in California and Florida (Arizona also backed a ban, but did not support Obama).

  1. Do you think, now this is JUST a possiblilty, that perhaps, may be, maybe, it is time to rethink the role of GOOFERMENT in marriage. It has NO legitimate interest in creating or en-FORCE-ing the results of its unwarranted intrusion into our private live.IMHO when you have a conflict like this, it\’s usually due to a fundamental conflict in principles. In this case, the GOOFERMENT has overreached.

  2. Exactly, government should not interfere in marriage and allow gays to marry. Aren\’t libertarians for maximum freedom? I thought libertarians didn\’t care if gays wanted to marry or not. Government has always been involved in marriage since the founding of this country, long before this gay marriage issue.

  3. >Government has always been involved> in marriage since the founding of > this countryNo, sorry, wishing won't make it so. \”Marriage Licensing\” comes out of the 1920s when southern state government bureaucrats were drafted to stop mixed race marriages. Later, it meandered into the tax code as politicians found ways to pander their \”concern for families\”!You're right! As a little L libertarian, I don't care if you want to take your goat to the Church of Baa Baa Black Sheep in South Brunswick and perform a ceremony to marry! MYOB!! There's only a State interest if you drag little boys and girls into that Church to sexually exploit. Or, if you practice human sacrifice. Outside of that, where there is NO injured person, do what you want. I don't have to applaud you and your goat, socialize with you and your goat, and certainly not give you or your goat money. The government ONLY has one function — provide for the common DEFENSE against the invading bad guys, and to protect my rights from force and fraud. (Fraud being a form of aggression.) That's it.We can go through a long list of what the big scary gooferment attempts to do and universally messes it up. Regulating marriage is just the tip of the iceberg.
