Runner’s diary, Monday

After a week during which I was plagued by a terrible cold that robbed me of energy, I got back on the treadmill today — three miles in 27 minutes (almost exactly), the hardest three I’ve run in a long while. I still have this cold, though it seems to be getting better. I did some light stretching after the run and hope to do another three tomorrow. I’m shooting for four runs (meeting Friday morning) for the week.

Runner’s diary, Tuesday

Three miles today in 26:36, despite being dogged by a terrible cold that has my stomache woozy and my head in a fog. I have a lot of writing ahead of me, so I need to find a way to clear myself up (took some decongestant). No guarantee I’ll hit the treadmill tomorrow, though.

Runner’s diary, Friday

A five-day running week has come to a close with a liesurely three-miler in 26:09. That’s a decent pace that I would have consider fast a year ago, but was probably my slowest in weeks. Consider that progress. Three miles today means 25 for the week and 140 for the year, significantly ahead of my goal of 900 miles for 2008. Finished off with weights — a mix of legs, arms and shoulders.

Runner’s diary, Wednesday

My hamstrings were incredibly tight this morning, especially the lower hammies closer to the knees, and my calves were sore. But that’s just random bellyaching. There will always be some sort of physical malady to deal with — running, after all, puts stress on the body. But without stress there can be no improvement in overall health, in performance, etc. And that’s why I run.

Anyway, despite the whining, I managed four miles in 34:44 — an 8:41 on a bad day. That pace tells me I’m doing what needs to be done.
