OK. Obama called McCain on the Iranian president. Good.

When does someone remind Sen. McCain that the Iranian president is not in charge of foreign affairs, or much of anything in Iran? The ayatollahs take care of that stuff.

OK. We get it. John McCain supports the surge and American efforts in Iraq; Obama doesn’t. We knew that before and their words have done little to change our sense.

This is a tough spot, because the two candidates are arguing two separate lines — McCain is focusing on the surge, Obama on the larger question of Iraq. I know where I stand, but I’m not sure that a discussion like this, when it occurs in different languages, offers the public much. I’m just not sure that the public will be able to parse it.
