Yes, I said it. The Mets bullpen proves the old youth-league baseball taunt: “We need a pitcher, not a belly itcher.” Once again, it's “wait 'Til next year.”

I am glad I left the house and don’t have to watch this — another last-day loss to keep the Mets home in October.

It appears that it is coming down to one inning in Milwaukee (Cubs 6, Brewers 3) and nine at Shea (oh, plus another nine in Milwaukee).

OMG, as the kids say. Johan Santana guaranteed this season lives on for another day with perhaps the most impressive pitching performance by a Met since, well, since Al Leiter tossed a 5-0 shutout against the Reds, throwing 135 pitches and giving up two hits and four walks. That was Oct. 4, 1999, and it put the Mets in the playoffs.
Whatever happens, today’s game, with Johan Santana and Ricky Nolasco locked up in a 2-0 duel is a throwback, a classic, like watching Gooden and Valenzuela or Seaver and Carlton.
