Al Leiter for Senate:Dumb idea, No. 4,247

Al Leiter for Senate??? Has anyone watched him broadcast a Yankee game? I mean, here’s a guy whose chief qualification is that he grew up in New Jersey and pitched some big games for the Mets. But really, Al Leiter for Senate? Really?

Granted, Leiter has been actively involved in charity work, but something about a Leiter candidacy just smacks of the absurd.

Plus, has anyone noticed how the star turn turned out in Pennsylvania? Remember Lynn Swan, star receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, managed to lose in a serious thumping in his race for governor (he managed a paltry 40 percent).

Frank Lautenberg maybe old, but it would be foolish to underestimate his political abilities in a state as blue as New Jersey.

Runner’s diary, Tuesday (a bit late)

Not really around a computer much yesterday, so here is part one of the runner’s diary, Tuesday edition a day late — before my Wednesday run.

Four hours in 37:29. Music was a mix.

Stay tuned for more postings. I promise.

Tata, Mr. G

So Alberto Gonzales has fallen on the sword, resigned his post as attorney general and that ends that. But it shouldn’t.

John Nichols sums the situation up better than most on the Web (his colleagues at The Nation, David Corn and Aziz Huq, complete some outstanding coverage). I have nothing to add.

Runner’s diary, Friday

This was a fairly solid week, even if I had trouble getting loose. I capped off a five-day running week with an eight-mile jaunt — in a not-so-quick 85 minutes (about) — getting outside for the first time in a while. My legs are stiff now, but the soreness seems to be subsiding, so we will see. Total for the week is 23 miles.

I basically have about five weeks of training before the race, with a week of rest (light running and other cardio), to double my mileage. Next week, if all goes well, I plan to run 25 and do 25-27 the rest of the way, with next week’s long run planned for 10.

Goal is 10 next week, 12 the first week in September, a 14-miler by Sept. 14 and a 16-miler by Sept. 21, then tick it down the week of Sept. 28 and a light week leading into the race.

LBI here we come.
