OMG, as the kids say. Johan Santana guaranteed this season lives on for another day with perhaps the most impressive pitching performance by a Met since, well, since Al Leiter tossed a 5-0 shutout against the Reds, throwing 135 pitches and giving up two hits and four walks. That was Oct. 4, 1999, and it put the Mets in the playoffs.
Baseball doesn’t get better
Whatever happens, today’s game, with Johan Santana and Ricky Nolasco locked up in a 2-0 duel is a throwback, a classic, like watching Gooden and Valenzuela or Seaver and Carlton.
Johan! (redux)
Ron Darling on Johan Santana: “This is the most fun I’ve had watching a starting pitchers since I used to chart No. 16, Dwight Gooden.” Yes.
Johan!
The line so far:
7 innings, 96 pitches, two hits, no runs, three walks and six strikeouts.
Why am I watching?
I have the Mets game on and it is 2-0 with Johan Santana pitching a gem — two hits, two outs in the seventh, earning his money so far.
