Not just in the United States, but around the globe. Share Nationalism, which George Orwell defined as "the habit of assuming that human beings can be classified like insects and that whole blocks of millions or tens of millions of people can be confidently labelled ‘good’ or ‘bad,’” and “the habit of identifying oneself with a single nation or other unit, placing it beyond good and evil and recognizing no other duty than that of advancing its interests.” Russia’s war against Ukraine is nationalist at its core, as is the continued Israeli assault on Gaza, which long ago moved beyond its supposed defensive justification. India Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a Hindu nationalist and his government — and the local governments run by his party — are engaged in an ethnic cleansing of Muslims from many areas of India. Its members hold themselves outside of established ethical norms and hold their positions for life. While lower federal courts are held to a long-standing Code of Conduct, which is enforceable under a 1980 statute, members of the High Court are not. The code, for them, is considered advisory — which, according to the Alliance for Justice, “is not enough.” This “voluntary system” leads to “misconduct” and “has left our judiciary and democracy in deep crisis,” AFJ wrote in a 2022 report calling for ethics reform. One of Larry Bird’s nicknames was “The Great White Hope.” The Celtics legend, one of the greatest players in the history of the NBA, hated the nickname. It was part pejorative, a sarcastic title meant to dismiss the white player as fraud, and part racist savior narrative. Venessa Marie Perry, an organizational psychologist, wrote last year in her Linked In newsletter, that the nickname’s long history was tied to racial resentment, to anger at the success of African American athletes. “Fans were so resentful of (the boxer Jack Johnson’s) success inside the ring that they searched for a white boxer, a great white hope, to defeat him,” she says. The same can be said about Caitlin Clark, the heralded rookie who has become a lightning rod in the WNBA — not because of her play, which has been good if not yet great, but because of what she means for the league’s ratings and to a cohort of new fans who see her as a rejoinder, a way of pushing against modernity.Clark is potentially a generational talent.
