Subscribe here for more The ‘Nazi Effect’ ‘Oppenheimer’ and the Gaza Rationale Hank Kalet Jul 1 ∙ Preview   READ IN APP   A headline in The New York Times caught my attention last week: “Blaming Hamas for Gazans’ Suffering, Many Israelis Feel Little Sympathy.” I had just watched Oppenheimer, the 2023 surprise blockbuster about the creation of the atomic bomb, and felt a sense of deja vu. Share The Israelis in the story lacked sympathy for Palestinian civilians. In fact, most dismissed the idea of “innocent civilians” altogether. They “blame(d) Hamas for starting the war and for embedding its fighters among the Gazan population, operating, according to the military, out of schools, hospitals and mosques, and in tunnels beneath Gazans’ homes." I could hear echoes of Cillian Murphy’s Oppenhiemer trying to convince his fellow scientists to join the Manhattan Project, which was seeking to create an atomic weapon, an American bomb that would kill guilty and innocent alike. The Nazis will use it, he says, so we have to use it first — a rationale that was updated to allow for the incineration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Share Share Channel Surfing American Inhumanity Grassroots / Hank Kalet America’s disregard of the humanity of others was on full display this week, with both presidential candidates doubling down on anti-immigrant and anti-Palestinian rhetoric during the presidential debate and the nation’s highest court ruling that towns can treat the most destitute as criminals. These issues are intertwined, despite major media outlets treating them as completely unrelated. All tie to a capitalist-colonialist mindset that privileges power and money at the expense of the well-being of all humanity, and that implicate what the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. described as America’s “triple-pronged sickness.” U.S. culture and politics from its inception has relied on tall tales and mythology to justify its brutality. Our wars and foreign policy have, for the most part, a racist underpinning that echoes the colonialist racism of Europe. We rationalize our behavior in the world stage by claiming to defend democracy — a lie more often than not — while acceding to oligarchy snd racism at home. Not just in the United States, but around the globe. Share Nationalism, which George Orwell defined as "the habit of assuming that human beings can be classified like insects and that whole blocks of millions or tens of millions of people can be confidently labelled ‘good’ or ‘bad,’” and “the habit of identifying oneself with a single nation or other unit, placing it beyond good and evil and recognizing no other duty than that of advancing its interests.” Russia’s war against Ukraine is nationalist at its core, as is the continued Israeli assault on Gaza, which long ago moved beyond its supposed defensive justification. India Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a Hindu nationalist and his government — and the local governments run by his party — are engaged in an ethnic cleansing of Muslims from many areas of India. As Azad Essa, writes in Hostile Homelands (qtd, In These Times), Benjamin Netanyahu and Narendra Modi share a “single-minded determination to build states with a single culture, a single race and a single nation.” I would add, this same, single-minded devotion to ethnic and religious monoculture and politics is shared by all manner of nationalisms, which Orwell describes as “inseparable from the desire for power.” Upgrade to paid Syndication/Reuse Books by Hank Kalet Unlock this post for free, courtesy of Hank Kalet.
