When Fascism Comes to America….

The violence this week is both shocking and not shocking. We have a president bringing back the word “Nationalist” and attacking “globalists” as though those words lack the connotations they have taken on over the last century. We have a president who cages children, calls immigrants an infestation, rails that black football players who take a knee “maybe shouldn’t be in the country.”

Trump, of course, is just a symptom of the rot and not the rot itself. He is the raving id of a deranged nation, but his thundering and clowning at the podium, his bullying and name calling have ultimately granted permission for white nationalists to come out of the shadows — to march in Charlottesville and to engage in the kind of violence we witnessed this week.

I can hear the response from my Trump supporting friends — both sides, both sides, both sides. Antifa (essentially a defensive, if wrongheaded, organization) and the GOP softball practice shooter will be raised as the examples. But there is no equivalence here.

Here are two pieces I wrote this week on the violence:

We are looking to raise seed money for an anthology of writing on Alzheimer’s and dementia. The anthology will be the first project from a new small press. All proceeds will go to research and care groups. Contributors who donate $20 or more will get copies of the anthology and a mention on the acknowledgements page.

See our GoFundMe page to contribute: https://www.gofundme.com/5nl9zvs

Call for poems, short stories, creative non-fiction/essays, illustrations and photos on dementia for a proposed anthology to be published later this year. Proceeds from the anthology will go to research on dementia and assistance for care of patients.

The anthology is slated to be the first publication from Stream Mountain Press.

The anthology seeks to cover all perspectives on Alzheimer’s and dementia, including those from patients, family members, care givers and researchers.

Material can be previously published.

Submissions should be made by email to hankkalet@gmai.com

Brett Kavanaugh: Privilege’s Last Stand

The Ford-Kavanaugh ‘Showdown’ Put Toxic Masculinity and Entitlement on Display

Brett Kavanaugh was visibly angry. He lashed out. He answered questions with disrespectful questions, spun conspiracy theories, and showed himself to be the bully that Christine Blasey Ford describes.

And yet, we can expect Brett Kavanaugh to win conformation to he U.S. Supreme Court — a lifetime appointment that will give him ample opportunity to press ahead with a virulent partisan agenda that is anti-worker, anti-woman, and deferential to executive power.

The Kavanaugh confirmation, though, is not about that agenda, not with a president like Donald Trump or a conservative Senate majority. The appointment of Neil Gorsuch demonstrated as much. This seat — formerly held by Anthony Kennedy, a conservative who occasionally sided with liberals to tilt the court in a less inhumane direction — will be filled by an arch conservative.

What the Kavanaugh confirmation shows, however, is that women’s voices do not matter. The #metoo movement has been effective in chasing some powerful men from their positions of power, but those instances have featured somewhat powerful women — actresses with a following — or men whom the power structure was comfortable dispatching. Men like Harvey Weinstein, Charlie Rose, and Louie C.K. deserved their rebukes and ultimate exile, but the real decision-makers in our society, the cabal of privileged white men of wealth or connection, they get protection.

CAPITALISM: Inequality Is Baked In

Let’s Change The System

The Target near me is hiring — starting at $12 an hour. Fed Ex is too, as the sign on Beekmann Road pointed out. Pay rate: $12.60 an hour. In general, warehouse and other manual labor jobs listed for the area (Central Jersey) on Craig’s List are paying the same — $12 an hour. Or there is a job for a machine set-up operator — $15 an hour, entry level.

People are hiring and the economy, one might assume, is taking flight. But the key thing these jobs share, aside from their availability, is that they do not pay enough to keep a Central Jersey household afloat.
