I’ve been wondering how Thomas Merton and Lawrence Ferlinghetti might respond to the current moment. Both were noted anti-war activists, in their way, and having just finished bill Morgan’s slim volume Thomas Merton, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and The Protection of All Things as a brutal war continues against Ukraine.
This week, Russia has stepped up its shelling of the Ukrainian town of Bakhmut in the Eastern province of Karkhiv. Residents are taking to the road. Houses being demolished. Rumors that the Ukrainian military will abandon the city. Russia’s illegal war on Ukraine has ground on for more than a year now. Will continue.
