The explosion in the Gulf — along with the lost lives and the damage that it is doing the region’s economy — should be enough to get President Obama to a abandon his off-shore drilling plan. I said “should,” because it is not clear that anyone is ready to stand up to corporate American on the issue.

rSo much for clean oil and clean coal. They are clean only in the corporate ads and until the next accident in which the environment is devastated or in the case of coal mines, until miners are killed, because, as we all know, miners are expendable commodities in the pursuit of obscene profits by the top 5%.The same goes for nuclear power. We are always assured that everything is so much safer and cleaner until the next accident comes along. And, shhh, do not talk about nuclear waste, that is just being negative. That oil spill is so massive that the federal government must step in and help clean up the mess of a private for profit industry. Our tax dollars will be needed to clean up this disaster as the CEOs rake in their millions, no matter what happens. Will criminal charges be filed against the CEOs for ignoring safety considerations?I hope this will abate or lessen the drill baby drill mentality for maybe 5 minutes. Remember, we were told that the new drilling methods and the new oil wells were absolutely safe and we should not worry our little minds about oil spills. We should be committed to renewable energy, wind, solar, geothermal, it should be an all out Marshall plan for energy. We should be weaning ourselves off of fossil fuels and nuclear energy, it won't happen over night but we should be making an all out commitment now rather than later.
