The Defense Department is looking for a nice chunk of change to continue funding the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq — and to finally upgrade equipment for the men in the field.
While the new equipment is necessary — it is unconscieanable that the Bush administration would wait this long to provide this stuff — it would be foolish for the Democrats to go along without attaching some very powerful strings to the funding.
The fact is that both of these wars have been abysmal failures, costing the lives of thousands of American soldiers and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. To just hand over the cash is tantamount to giving a tip to a parking garage attendant who has taken your car for a long-distance joyride while you were sitting at dinner.
